F is for Fiber-fueled

We humans evolved eating huge amounts of fiber, likely up to 10 times more than we eat today. Fiber is not a very sexy nutrient and yet it’s the one we really want to get to know better

We can stop worrying about getting enough protein. ( Of course the meat and dairy industry disagrees). FIBER is the nutrient that most, it's estimated that 97% of us are not getting enough. This is having an impact on our health. And a negative impact on our gut microbiome, which the subject of my next post "G is for Gut Health"

Fiber is present in all plant foods, so we're talking about anything we can grow, such as fruits and vegetables.
Fiber is not found in meats, dairy or eggs.

  • Fiber-rich foods can help reduce cravings, and help you feel satiated.

  • They can help remove toxins.

  • They can help you maintain your natural weight.

  • They are hydrating, anti-inflammatory, low in caloric density, and help maintain balance in our gut.

The fiber present in whole plant foods, such as oranges, or berries, or beans, helps to keep the blood sugar steady and helps to ward off the cravings. These foods will not trigger the pleasure centers in your brain the way concentrated sugars and processed foods will.

To get more fiber try these:

Try trading deserts like ice cream or cookies FOR apple slices and creamy nut butter or a blended frozen banana "ice cream" w/nut butter.

Try trading cheetos or potato chips FOR roasted thinly sliced potatoes, or sweet potatoes topped w/ toasted pecans.
